ISOBUD TPO membrane: properties and advantages

What a TPO membrane is

A TPO membrane is a roll waterproofing material made of thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), used to cover flat roofs on buildings of any type. The sheet combines tensile strength, elasticity and UV resistance, which is why a TPO roofing membrane lasts for decades without replacement.

The sheets are laid loose or mechanically fastened, and the seams are joined by hot-air welding — the weld is watertight and as strong as the membrane itself. No open flame or adhesives are needed, so installation is fast and can be carried out on a building in operation.

Where a TPO roofing membrane is used

The main application is flat roofs of commercial, industrial and public buildings: shopping centres, warehouses, logistics complexes and production facilities. A TPO membrane suits both new construction and full refurbishment of an old roof with complete replacement of the insulation layers.

Beyond roofing, the material is used as a waterproofing layer in underground structures, tunnels, bridges and other infrastructure projects, as well as on green roofs — the sheet is root-resistant.

ISOBUD TPO membrane is a reliable, long-lasting way to protect structures from moisture and weather: a service life of more than 40 years, resistance to UV radiation and chemicals, and an operating temperature range from −40 to +80 °C.

Roof build-ups, components and applications of the five ISOBUD systems are described in the roofing systems with TPO membrane section.

ISOBUD TPO SP single-ply membrane, 1.2–2.0 mm thick

ISOBUD TPO SP — thickness 1.2 / 1.5 / 1.8 / 2.0 mm

Single-ply version

ISOBUD TPO SP 1.2 mm is a single-ply membrane compliant with the international standard ASTM D131-95. It is used on flat roofs, hard-to-reach areas of concrete surfaces and green roofs. Its increased elasticity makes the material suitable for protecting corners and junctions. TPO membranes are also widely used for pipeline insulation.

ISOBUD TPO RF membrane reinforced with polyester mesh

ISOBUD TPO RF — thickness 1.2 / 1.5 / 1.8 / 2.0 mm

Mesh-reinforced

These TPO membranes are produced in 1.2 and 1.5 mm thicknesses, reinforced with polyester mesh or glass fibre, provide a fully watertight envelope and meet the international standard ASTM D6878. ISOBUD TPO RF membranes are designed in line with fire safety requirements to the EN class. They are used on flat roofs, including hard-to-reach areas of concrete structures, and for tunnel lining.

Advantages of TPO membranes:

High strength: resistant to mechanical damage, punctures and tears.

Durability: a service life of more than 40 years thanks to resistance to UV radiation and chemicals.

Fire performance: high fire resistance ratings that improve the safety of the building in service.

Protects against natural weathering

Environmental safety: the material releases no harmful substances and is safe for the environment.

Temperature stability: retains its properties from −40 °C to +80 °C.

Easy installation: the covering is laid quickly and accurately even on complex surfaces.

Hot-air welding: makes the seams watertight and the joints between membrane sheets dependable.
